GPE 2.8 is released
The G Palmptop Environment (GPE) project is proud to announce a new release: GPE 2.8 is ready.
We have collected a lot of improvement and many bugfixes for this release to make GPE a more mature and stable framework to run on multiple devices. Due to the move of the project to its new hosting location it took much longer than expected to finish this release. The roadmap provides a small overview about the components that are part of the release.
The most important changes since 2.7 are:
- A heavily improved gpe-calendar and related libraries
- Improved import/export and syncronisation support
- Starling - a new audio player for GPE
- Improved support for the Maemo platform (gpe-timesheet, gpe-filemanager, gpe-calendar, Starling)
- Better support for porting to new devices
- A screenshot tool for the LinuxToGo screenshot service (gpe-scap)
- All applications support the stable DBus API
- Many more improvements in PIM applications, configuration tools, browser and most of the libraries
Apart from GPE itself the website get some improvement such as more information about the components and a slighly improved look and feel. We do not need to share a bugtracker with Familiar - there is a new bugtracker that covers GPE at http://bugs.linuxtogo.org.
If you want to build GPE 2.8 you should take a look at OpenEmbedded which has an include file that makes sure that you get GPE 2.8 in your builds. If you want to download the components you can either use the big tar archive at the GForce project pages or get the single bits from here.
Many thanks to our developers and all the other contributors that made this release possible!
Have a good time and enjoy GPE!
